Note from Nona
Hello & Back 2 Now! It’s been a long time coming but with determination, love, blood, sweat, tears and a lot of fun singing (raising da roof) together again, we’ve made a record we hope contains music our fans from the past and newbies will love on their first listen or grow to love even more over time as we have.
We can’t please all of the people all of the time but we gave it a good shot. Whatever you don’t like, don’t listen to, that is the choice of everyone who lives in a free society and cherish what you love. We love you for being there for us and our music individually and collectively as Labelle. Hopefully many of you have already heard ‘Roll Out’ co written & produced by Wyclef Jean but there’s more inside...come on in and hold on it’s gonna be a emotional roller coaster ride! ‘BACK TO NOW’
Back then, where we left off in 1978, Labelle was just over the crest of success and searching the horizon for our next musical destination when it all went pear–shaped! Patti moved on to recording amazing R&B records and wiping stages clean with her live performance around the world. Sarah mined the Club world which then led to jazzier interpretations with her strong soprano vocals. I continued my Sex, Drugs & Rock & Roll musical exploration which morped into Funk & Roll over the 25 to 30 years post Labelle. Whew, it’s not easy to pack that much time into that small amount of space but this conversation will be continued over hopefully years to come.
Now, here’s a short catch up on Labelle activities late week and the coming week. Sarah and I spent the night at Patti’s house before doing our first in studio on air performance since the 70’s. It was hilarious! Patti who is the original Nightbird I paid tribute to in the song that was the title of our most successful album is still a Nightbird! It’s a good thing I am too but Sarah, alas is not! Every time we’re together and it’s been a lot since March for rehearsals, writing sessions, recording, promotion, etc., we’ve burned the midnight oil. We end up hanging out in the kitchen (sometimes Patti cooking) of course, or in one of our hotel rooms well into the wee hours of the night. We flip through channels, discuss politics, the economy, family, social issues, we reminisce and yes, we GOSSIP! One of our favorite topics other than politics has to be SHOES; fabulous, not so fabulous, a pair we want or a pair we just purchased, if they’re painful but fab enough to suffer for and how to maneuver in the new skyscraper Christian Louboutin’s. At some point Patti and I look at Sarah and she’s asleep, out like a light! We woke her up last time and she rejoined the conversation as if she’d not been asleep and we were on another subject, you had to be there because it was funny.
No matter what age we are, when we are together, it seems our sisterhood that began way BACK when, contains love, difference, understanding, interdependence as well as independence is our strength as Labelle NOW.
